BANGKOK: More than 100 illegally-felled Siamese rosewood logs worth about 10 million baht were seized from a pickup truck in Si Sa ket’s Khun Han district here the other day.

A team of police, soldiers and forestry officials stopped a suspicious Bangkok-registered pickup truck leaving the Huay Taju forest in tambon Huay Chan around 5.30am.

The driver quickly jumped out and fled into a nearby forest, abandoning the pickup with a container in the back. Inside officers found 109 phayung logs.

The logs could have fetched up to 10 million baht if sold, said Theppitak Muensawat, assistant Khun Han district chief for defence. Two Mukdahan licence plates also were found in the vehicle, Siamrath Online reported.

The seizure of the logs followed an investigation that a gang of log poachers had illegally cut trees in Huay Taju forest.
