ATHENS: The food industry occupies the largest share in the Greek industry, according to data from the Economic and Industrial Research Foundation. The companies in this sector work with the largest number of employees in the industry 28%, compared to 9% for the metallurgical companies. Overall, food companies account for 25% of all industrial plants aagainst 13% for metallurgy, statistics show.
With regard to the financial part, the food industry produces 20% of the total Greek GDP, and its revenues are second (22% of the total) after the fuel and refineries sector (33%). The data also show that small food companies are predominant in Greece 95% in food production and 87% in beverages. In most cases, it is even about micro enterprises up to ten people. In terms of finance, however, large companies (with over 250 employees) dominate they earn 36% of revenue in the whole food sector and 57% of beverages.
