NEW DELHI: These are the best spy pictures yet of the new 2016 Audi R8 Spyder, the second-generation soft-top supercar from Ingolstadt.
Like the outgoing R8 Spyder, the drop-top gets rid of the glass panel above the engine from the Coupe and adds extra cooling vents to the extended rear panel. The fabric roof itself is very similar in design to the old auto, with two buttresses on either side extending back onto the engine bay and a vertical rear window that retracts when the roof is lowered.
Based on the coupe, it isn’t too hard to imagine what the Spyder would look like, but in an interesting move, Audi has camouflaged every inch of this prototype with the exception of the power-retractable soft top. There doesn’t appear to be any surprises in store, with the ragtop R8 looking like a restrained evolution of the previous generation model.
The new R8 Spyder will still pack the same 5.2-liter V-10, but the added weight and reduced aerodynamics should negatively affect performance. The standard R8 Coupe accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, so expect the Spyder to be a few ticks slower.
Like the coupe, it will first feature a mid-mounted V10 engine that pumps through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to propel the vehicle from 0-100km/h in an eye-watering 3.6 seconds, give or take.
