MOSCOW: While Russian producers have struggled to ramp up production and pick up the slack, countries existing outside the parameters of the EU are continuing to benefit from fresh business.
The Faroe Islands – which although part of Denmark enjoys independent trading status – is one such country to have reaped the rewards from its decision to stay out of the EU.
Archipelago’s Russian salmon export business is now so pivotal to its economy that it formed a large chunk of debate around last month’s general election.
Iran is also looking to profit. According to Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture Bureau of International Affairs and Specialized Organizations director-general Hooman Fathi, there is now a market potential for third countries to export food items to Russia worth $40 billion per year.
Iran, he said, was investigating the possibility of expanding its food exports to include fish products, in addition to poultry, fruit and vegetables.
