DELHI: Apple iPhone has one of the best still cameras that could easily replace point and shoots; however, it looks like Apple also wants it to be the best camcorder.

The Cupertino giant has been granted a patent for a “Digital camera with light splitter” making it possible for the company to embed an advanced three-sensor based camera module within the iPhone. The patent was first spotted by Apple Insider.

As the website notes, the three-sensor imaging technology splits incident light that enters a camera into three wavelengths, or colours, via prisms, mirrors or lenses. The three light components could then be diverted to three dedicated sensors.

The technology would allow Apple to utilise more pixels compared to a single sensor and drastically improve the quality of video and still captures.

The three sensor imaging technology is used in presume video cameras and camcorders by the likes of Canon, Panasonic, Philips, as per the report.

Just like other patents, it’s still unclear if Apple will use the technology in the next-generation iPhone devices.
