TOKYO: Tokyo stocks rose sharply on Monday, with the Nikkei index closing above the 20,000 line for the first time in one week, as investor sentiment was boosted by the yen’s weakness against the U.S. dollar and hopes for a resolution in Greece’s debt negotiations.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 309.94 points, or 1.57 percent, from Friday at 20,089.77. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 29.96 points, or 1.89 percent, higher at 1,613.51.
