TOKYO: Tokyo stocks fell sharply on Wednesday morning as investor sentiment was dampened by a wary global mood following the release of economic indicators showing weakness in both China and Germany.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 363.24 points, or 1.99 percent, from Tuesday to 17,871.50. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 34.61 points, or 2.30 percent, to 1,468.52.
