LAHORE: The City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) has banned sale and purchase of the tomato at Wagah Border under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Badami Bagh Fruit and Vegetable Market Secretary Tauqir Sindhu said that the core objective of imposing Section 144 is to stop importers/investors from selling tomato at the border after importing it from India. He said the decision will also force the exporters to bring their commodity to Lahore’s wholesale vegetable markets and sell it through the open auction under supervision of the officials concerned.

Meanwhile, the CDGL claimed to have reduced price of tomato in the provincial metropolis by ensuring auction at the city’s vegetable markets. Rejecting reports of a news channel, a CDGL spokesman said that since a huge quantity of tomato was available in markets because of 165 truckloads’ arrival from India to Lahore, its price had dropped to Rs35 per kg (wholesale) and Rs40 in retail price.
