TOKYO: Japan’s second-biggest oil refiner by capacity, TonenGeneral Sekiyu, imported the country’s second cargo of U.S. condensate derived from booming shale production, an industry source familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Trade ministry data on Friday showed 318,773 barrels (50,681 kilolitres) of processed condensate was imported to Japan in September. The Ministry of Finance data showed the same volume of crude condensate passed through Kawasaki customs near Tokyo last month.
TonenGeneral Sekiyu, which operates a 258,000 barrels per day refinery in Kawasaki, declined to comment.
Cosmo Oil became the first Japanese buyer to import the ultra-light crude from U.S. shale fields in October 2014.
U.S. condensate imported last month cost 6,163 yen ($51.22) a barrel on a delivered cost-insurance-and-freight (CIF) basis, according to Reuters calculations based on trade data issued by Japan’s Ministry of Finance on Thursday. ($1 = 120.3200 yen)
