Torkham Customs recovers 61.2kg charas, 3.2kg opium during routine checking

ISLAMABAD: Officials at the Torkham Customs Station claimed to have recovered at least 61.2 kilogrammes of Afghan origin garda (charas) and 3.2 kilogrammes of  opium during routine checking.

Sources told Customs Today that the Torkham Customs Station staff intercepted a truck coming from Afghanistan and recovered the narcotics which were concealed in spare tyres of the vehicle.

The customs staff impounded the truck and arrested the driver and others who were inside the truck for their alleged involvement in the smuggling bid. A first information report (FIR) has been lodged against the Afghan nationals and further investigations are underway.

Authorities are developing the Peshawar-Torkham border on international standards and gates are setup which is fitted with several scanners and barriers. Pakistan and Afghanistan share a 3600 kilometer long border. Authorities have barricaded this border, while border areas which can not be crossed even by pedestrians are not fixed with barricades.

FIA is there for proper immigration, Customs is conducting scanning and examining of goods, militia and khasadar force has also setup check posts and there extend all cooperation to Customs. It may be mentioned here the entire campaign is aimed to curbing smuggling, which has been a prime source of funding terrorism and anti-social activities.
