HONG KONG: On Saturday, January 10, look low in the SW after only sunset to see Venus and Mercury in a bright close pairing, between about 5:15 and 6 PM. They are already quite close, and will be for days, but Saturday is closest approach.
Venus will be about 147 million miles away from us, and Mercury will be about 100 million miles away. If you watch them each night over the next two weeks, you can watch Mercury rapidly move away from Venus and drop from sight toward the Sun.
