MEXICO CITY: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump confirmed his recent comments about building a wall at the United States’ border with Mexico, saying, “Mexico will pay” to build it.
“I will build the wall and Mexico’s going to pay for it and they will be happy to for it. Because Mexico is making so much money from the United States that that’s going to be peanuts,” Trump told CNN. “And all these other characters say, ‘Oh, they won’t pay, they won’t pay.’ They don’t know the first thing about how to negotiate. Trust me, Mexico will pay.”
Trump first said he would force Mexico, should he win the presidential election next year, to pay for a wall at the border in June.
“They have taken advantage of us for a long time,” Trump told Newsmax TV on June 29. “Between trade and between the border, they will pay for that wall. … Remember what I said: They will pay for that wall.”
Experts have said, however, that Trump’s promise of having a wall built to separate the two countries could come with a multibillion-dollar price tag.
Trump’s poll numbers have surged in recent weeks, and he leads in several national polls of Republican candidates in the presidential race. The results of a new poll in Iowa, for example, show Trump has a significant lead over the rest of the GOP field.
