Turkey Jan thermal coal imports fall 2% YOY

ANKARA: Turkey imported 2.25 million mt of bituminous thermal coal in January, down 2% year on year and 25% from December to a four-month low, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) Monday.

Russia remained the most popular origin of thermal coal for Turkey, shipping 1.06 million mt of material during January, rising 30% year on year, but falling 24% from the previous month, the TUIK data showed.

Colombia was Turkey’s second main supplier of thermal coal, delivering 869,500 mt in January, up 8% year on year, but falling 11% from December. South African thermal coal shipments to Turkey in January dropped 5% year on year to 270,019 mt, also down 54% from December to a four-month low.

According to the data, Turkey’s January imported thermal coal purchases totalled $175.65 million, equivalent to a monthly average price of $77.96/mt. Platts assessed the January monthly average of its CIF Turkey 6,000 kcal/kg NAR 90-day price at $53/mt, down $1.60/mt month on month.

Turkey’s total coking coal imports in January rose 13% year on the year, but dropped 44% from December, according to the TUIK data. During January, Turkey imported 161,297 mt of coking coal from Canada, 80,749 mt from Australia and 9,327 mt from Russia. Turkey’s January anthracite imports were 59,187 mt, down from 95,293 mt in December.
