ANKARA: Job-related accidents in Turkey killed 1,317 workers in the first nine months of 2015, the İstanbul Council for Workers’ Health and Work Safety (İSİG) noted on Monday.
The number of workplace casualties in September alone hit 177, and this number pushed the death toll for the January-September period up to 1,317.
In its latest report about what it calls “workplace murders” in a bid to address the widespread negligence often involved in the incidents, İSİG said it had witnessed no improvement regarding the standard for safe work environments in the past year, underlining that the number of fatalities stemming from job accidents was 152 in September of last year.
The İSİG report indicated that 128 people were killed in January in work-related accidents, 85 in February, 140 in March, 135 in April, 167 in May, 155 in June, 171 in July, 159 in August and 177 in September.
Among September’s death toll, nine were children, 17 were women and nine were Syrian, and there was one Turkmen refugee among them. A total of 11 of September’s victims were 65 years of age or more.
Vehicular accidents, falling from construction site buildings, being trapped in a collapse or other wreckage and electrocution were among the most likely causes of death in September, according to the İSİG report. The İSİG report said most accidents occurred in sectors that are known for often having poor working conditions and noted that the agricultural, construction and transportation industries were the three most deadly sectors.
The report also revealed that İstanbul, Antalya and Hatay were the three provinces with the highest number of worker deaths in September.
