Turkish iron ore imports up 13% in Sep: report

ANKARA: The latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) suggests that the country’s iron ore imports surged higher during the month of September this year.
The imports during the month totaled 950,101 tons, surging higher by 12.77% when compared with the imports during the same month a year ago. The Turkish iron ore imports had totaled 842,512 tons during September last year. It must be noted that the demand for imported iron ore has declined marginally relative to the previous month.
The import value generated by iron ores totaled $73.50 million during the month. The import values witnessed sharp decline of almost 26.55% year-on-year during September 2015.
The cumulative iron ore imports by Turkey during the initial nine-month period in 2015 totaled 7.51 million tons, up by nearly 18.5% when compared with the imports during the corresponding nine-month period from January to September last year. The Turkish iron ore imports during January to September last year had totaled 6.34 million tons.
The largest supplier of iron ore to Turkey during the nine-month period was Brazil. The imports from Brazil totaled 3.43 million tons, accounting for nearly 54% of the total imports by the country during this period. The iron ore imports from Brazil witnessed sharp surge of 44.66% over the previous year.
In second place was Sweden with 1.322 million tons. The imports from that country witnessed a marginal increase of 0.26% over the previous year. Sweden had shipped nearly 1.318 million tons of iron ore to Turkey during Jan- Sep ’14. In third place was Russia with 1.118 million tons. The iron ore shipments to Turkey from Russia dropped significantly by 5.22% during the nine-month period relative to the previous year.
