NEW DELHI: As originally reported on the Deccan Herald, two people were arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in India for attempting to smuggle gold. One of the two who were arrested was a ground-handling worker.
The Customs Air Intelligence Unit (CAIU) of KIA had received a tip-off that after one of the two landed from an Emirates Airways flight that had originated in Dubai. The officers discovered gold ingots in his baggage with no documents that identified that he was carrying them. Later—the ground-handling worker was arrested after it was revealed that he had taken part in the attempted smuggling.
CAIU recovered four kg of gold, with estimated worth at over $160,000. The two suspects will remain in judicial custody until their hearing on Jan. 27. Since April of last year, 160 people have been arrested in connection with smuggling gold.
