U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents find 18 people inside refrigerated tractor trailer

WASHINGTON: U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents found 18 people inside a refrigerated tractor trailer at the Falfurrias checkpoint on Wednesday morning, according to a news release. After a K-9 alerted agents, the refrigerated tractor trailer was referred for secondary inspection, according to the news release. Agents used bolt cutters to gain access to the tractor trailer, as the driver didn’t have a key, according to the news release. Agents discovered 18 immigrants among the produce inside the vehicle. The temperature inside the tractor trailer was set at 51 degrees.

The immigrants were reportedly from various countries including Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Four immigrants were reportedly from Kosovo, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.The driver of the tractor trailer, a Mexican national, was arrested and referred for prosecution, according to the news release. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol RGV Sector asks the public to report suspicious activity by calling 800-863-9382.
