NEW YORK: U.S. stocks eked out modest gains on Monday as investors digested a mixed bag of economic reports, including data on consumer spending and manufacturing. Investors weighed how current data will influence the Federal Reserve’s decision on when to begin raising interest rates, as policy makers focus on targeting inflation and unemployment rate. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.21% closed 4.35 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,111.74. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.16% added 29.69 points, or 0.2%, to 18,040.37. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.25% ended the session up 12.90 points, or 0.3%, at 5,082.93.
