Udupi customs arrests 7 in red sanders smuggling

UDUPI: Manipal police have arrested 7 persons who were involved in the smuggling of red sanders on Wednesday June 17.

The arrested persons are Saif (32) Nadim Sunil (23), Nisar B (36), Amin A (23), Niyaz (23), Aymen (26) and Shahjahan (32), all from Kerala.

The Manipal police led by sub inspector S Nagesh Mestha stopped three vehicles at Perampally on Ambagilu Manipal road which carried the red sanders and seized the same.

The vehicles carried 575 kilograms of red sanders with a value of Rs 28 lacs. The total value of the seized materials exceeds Rs 48 lacs as the value of the three vehicles is estimated at Rs 20.20. Police also seized 8 mobile phones from the smugglers.

When the police on a credible tip off stopped a Kerala registered pickup, they found red sanders loaded at the back of the pickup. Then the police also stopped Innova car which was following the pickup. There also they found red sanders concealed under the seat. Then when they stopped the Ritz car which was following the Innova, the driver of Ritz car tried to run away. But the police managed to catch all of them and foiled the smuggling attempt.

The vehicles were coming from Kerala on their way to Manipal. The accused have identified the persons who were supposed to receive the consignment as Sachin Shetty, Nelson and Austin from Manipal.
