NAIROBI: Uganda’s inflation declined in April from last month, helped by slowing price rises of food and energy, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) said on Friday. The statistics office said headline inflation dropped to 5.1 percent year-on-year this month from 6.2 percent in March. Annual core inflation, which excludes food, fuel, electricity and metered water declined to 6.4 percent this month, from March’s 6.9 percent.
UBOS cited a slowdown in food prices, energy and other utilities for the drop in the overall inflation. Uganda’s central bank cut its policy rate earlier this month, citing a likelihood of both headline and core inflation hovering around 6.5 percent in the first half of 2016, before declining to a medium term target of 5 percent in first quarter 2017.
The statistics body said inflation had declined for vegetables and fruits during the month. “The other driver was the annual energy, fuel and utilities inflation that decreased,” UBOS said. Monthly headline inflation rose by 0.1 percent in April compared with 0.9 percent in March.
