LONDON: Illegal drugs with a likely street value of more than £1.6 million were seized at a parcel depot near Tamworth.

Border Force officers discovered the packages of cannabis, amphetamines and ecstasy over two days in 18 separate parcels at the UPS parcel depot in Birch Coppice.

The drugs were concealed in plastic and cardboard boxes.

Phillip Holliday, Border Force’s regional director, praised officers over the find.

“It is thanks to the vigilance and expertise of Border Force officers that this attempt to smuggle a large amount of drugs into the country has been stopped,” he said.

“By making this seizure, estimated to be worth more than £1.6m, our officers have prevented a substantial quantity of illegal drugs from ending up on the streets of the UK and put a serious dent in the profits of the criminals involved in this type of smuggling.”

The seizure was made by Border Force on December 21 and December 22 last year, with information about the discovery made publicly available this week.

Investigations by the National Crime Agency are continuing, a Home Office spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to smuggling can call the Customs Hotline on 0800 59 5000.
