LONDON: Britain just got dragged into the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

The German carmaker confirmed in a statement emailed to Business Insider that 1.2 million cars in the UK contain the software that was found to be falsifying emissions data in the US.

All the cars involved run on diesel and include VW brand, Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW vans.

Volkswagen will be announcing how British car owners can check if their vehicles are affected in the next few days.

VW will also contact owners any affected cars in due course, but stresses the cars are “technically safe and roadworthy.”

US regulators discovered earlier this month that many Volkswagen diesel cars were fitted with software that meant emission data came out lower when cars were being tested than when they were out on the open road.

Emissions were as much as 40 times higher than test results in the lab, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. An estimated 11 million cars worldwide contain the software.
