UK stocks jump at close, United Kingdom 100 soars 1.09%

NEW YORK: U.K. stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Industrial Metals & Mining, Oil Equipment Services & Distribution and Fixed Line Telecommunications sectors led shares higher.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 rose 1.09%.

The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Fresnillo PLC (L:FRES), which rose 4.63% or 34.00 points to trade at 768.00 at the close. Meanwhile, GlaxoSmithKline PLC (L:GSK) added 3.88% or 53.000 points to end at 1420.500 and Randgold Resources Ltd (L:RRS) was up 3.76% or 170.00 points to 4686.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Meggitt PLC (L:MGGT), which fell 20.46% or 94.40 points to trade at 367.00 at the close. Lloyds Banking Group PLC (L:LLOY) declined 4.39% or 3.4000 points to end at 74.0000 and Antofagasta PLC (L:ANTO) was down 1.47% or 8.00 points to 536.50.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the London Stock Exchange by 1333 to 800 and 416 ended unchanged.

Shares in Meggitt PLC (L:MGGT) fell to 52-week lows; falling 20.46% or 94.40 to 367.00.

Gold for December delivery was up 1.06% or 12.40 to $1178.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 6.02% or 2.60 to hit $45.80 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 4.73% or 2.21 to trade at $49.02 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 0.22% to 1.5333, while EUR/GBP rose 0.03% to 0.7222.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.37% at 96.66.
