KIEV: Ukraine’s grain imports fell to 21,200 tonnes in May from 34,700 tonnes in April and 185,900 in March, analysts said on Wednesday. ProAgro agriculture consultancy said Ukraine had imported a total of 3.546 million tonnes of grain in July-May. Analysts said Ukraine, which harvested in 2003 its worst wheat crop for the past 50 years, imported 13,100 tonnes of wheat, 6,600 tone of rice, and 1,400 tonnes of flour in May.
The country imported 23,500 tonnes of wheat, 854 tonnes of rye, 8,400 tonnes of rice and 1,900 tonnes of flour in April. Traders have said a fall in grain crop output this year would force Ukraine to import more than 3.5 million tonnes of grain in the 2003/04 season.
