MULTAN: A wave of uncertainty has gripped the Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation in Multan, following the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) recent decision to abolish the Customs Intelligence department. The move has left officials concerned and uncertain about their future roles within the organization, amid ongoing reforms initiated by the government.
The FBR’s decision to dissolve Customs Intelligence comes on the heels of persistent criticisms related to the department’s performance, including allegations of involvement in smuggling activities. This restructuring effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at overhauling the Customs Intelligence and Investigation division, which will now pivot to focus solely on monitoring activities.
As per the directive issued by the Prime Minister, the FBR has formally notified the end of Customs Intelligence officers’ authority to stop or release consignments, conduct raids, or carry out sting operations. This decision effectively strips the department of its enforcement powers, signaling a significant shift in the country’s customs and investigative landscape.
Officials within Customs Intelligence and Investigation are reportedly under immense pressure, grappling with the implications of the FBR’s reform policies. The abrupt changes have raised concerns over job security, career progression, and the broader direction of the organization. Many officials express deep anxiety over the restructuring, with uncertainty at an all-time high as the reform plans unfold.
