SYNEY: A range of underwater volcanoes has been discovered off eastern Australia. The cluster of four cones, about 155 miles (250km) from Sydney, is 13 miles (20km) long, 3.7 miles (6km) wide and lies about three miles (5km) below the surface.
But Australians need not fear, they have been extinct for millions of years.
They were discovered by Australia’s new ocean-going research vessel Investigator, which was searching for the nursery grounds of young lobsters at the time.
The largest measures nearly a mile (1,500m) across the rim and rises 700m (2,275ft) above the sea floor, which is at a depth of 4,900m (15,925ft).
Experts say they were forced up from the ocean bed around 50 million years ago.
