LONDON: More people in the Oshawa area are out of work, according to new numbers from Statistics Canada. In June, the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – saw its seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rise to 6.4 per cent from 5.6 per cent the month before. This, however, is lower than the same time last year, with June 2015 seeing a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.7 per cent.

While the numbers did go up in the Oshawa area last month, it is still lower than the rate for both the province and the country as a whole, which came in at 6.7 per cent and 7.0 per cent respectively.

The country saw a small drop in the unemployment rate from May, dropping to 7.0 per cent from 7.1 per cent. According to Statistics Canada, this can be attributed to declines in construction, manufacturing and other services, while there were increases in accommodation and food services, information, culture and recreation.
