HAVANA: Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack just back from a trade mission to Cuba says there needs to be legislation lifting the trade embargo restrictions with the island nation. Iowa Farmers Union President Jana Linderman says her group supports trade with Cuba and agrees with the call to action by the Ag Secretary.
Linderman says one way to make progress on human rights with Cuba is to lift the embargo and open up trade with them.
Vilsack had noted that some Cuban officials hoped more could be done through executive orders to lift trade restrictions. Linderman says using executive orders isn’t the best route to enhancing trade with Cuba.
Linderman says Iowa could benefit with trade with Cuba especially with corn and poultry products.
