US Army pilferage case: SHC grants pre-arrest bail to two suspects

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has granted pre-arrest bail to two suspects in a case pertaining to pilferage of US the Army transit cargo.

A single bench comprising Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto approved the bail for Nadir Khan and Adnan with surety bond of Rs 30, 000 each for seven days. The court suspended the operation of non-bailable warrants issued by the trial court for their arrest.

Advocate Shaukat Hayat, representing the applicants, submitted that the investigation officer had submitted final challan in cargo pilferage case on July 24 in which his clients, who are employees of Peerzada Services International, were shown accused. He submitted that the applicants were innocent and implicated in the case. Moreover, he said, no specific role was assigned to the applicants in commission of offence.

He pleaded with the court to grant bail to his clients so that they could surrender before the trial court and face charges.

According to the details of the FIR, Ghani International, an authorized representative of Consulate General of United States of America filed goods declaration for a consignment of US Army reverse cargo declared to contain generator power with transformer and equipment for transit to Karachi port for export to Dubai.

During perusal and observation of the scanning images and weight, and weight slips of the GDs, the images of instant GD did not appear as per the description declared in the invoice and packing list.

Therefore, the consignment was examined physically in the presence of representatives of Multitrans International Private Limited, and Peerzada Services International being the authorized representative of US Consulate General.

During the course of examination, shipper and custom seals were found intact. However, the generating sets declared in the Invoice and packing list were not found in the containers.

Subsequently an FIR was lodged against the directors of Port Connection namely Raza-ur-Rehman, Malik Ali Asghar and Romail Ahmed Dar; Shahzad Rasool of Multitrans Logistics; Peerzada Abdul Aleem of Peerzada Services International; Adil Ghani of Ghani’s International; Shahid Ansari of Bilal Associates, Tikka Khan of Adil Goods Transport Co., Irfan Afridi and others.
