SHALLOTTE, NC: The Secretary of State’s Office says investigators seized nearly $63,000 worth of counterfeit goods from a Brunswick County store yesterday.

Secretary of State spokeswoman Liz Proctor said officers took the DVDs, CDs and clothing with name-brand tags like Air Jordan, Air Max, Michael Kors, Northface, Timberland and Polo from Fresh Gear on Main Street in Shallotte. Proctor said equivalent genuine merchandise has a retail value of $62,940.

Investigators went to the store after an anonymous tip, Proctor said. No one has been charged yet, she said, but the investigation continues.

The Secretary of State established the NC Anti-Counterfeit Task Force in 2004. It includes 80 local law enforcement officers across the state, including one in Brunswick County, who receive special training to spot fakes.

If you suspect knock-off merchandise is being sold, you can contact your local law enforcement agency or the Secretary of State’s Trademark Tipline at (919) 807-2178.
