GULFPORT: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says Border Patrol agents from the New Orleans sector recently interrupted a human smuggling attempt near Gulfport.
On Nov. 15, agents arrested 41-year-old Roberto Esquivel-Alonso, a citizen of Mexico illegally present in the U.S., for transporting illegal aliens. He was arraigned Dec. 18.
According to court records, agents stopped two SUVs traveling together along Highway 90 near Gulfport. Esquivel-Alonso operated one vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, and an accomplice operated the second, a 2001 GMC Yukon.
During the stop, agents say they found 10 passengers between the two vehicles and all were illegal aliens from Mexico.
Agents arrested Esquivel-Alonso, detained the 11 other men, and seized the two SUVs.
The maximum penalty for transportation of illegal aliens is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The New Orleans Sector, part of the South Texas Campaign, continues to conduct enforcement operations throughout the Gulf Coast Corridor to disrupt and degrade smuggling operations.
