EL PASO: The U.S. Border Patrol says the apprehension of immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally along New Mexico and portions of West Texas has increased by more than 8 percent over the last fiscal year.
Patrol agents in the El Paso sector apprehended more than 11,200 people in the fiscal year that ended July 31. There were nearly 10,400 taken into custody in the prior year.
The numbers include a significant rise in families stopped along the border. About 825 families were detained in the last fiscal year, up from 490.
There was also an increase in unaccompanied minors who were apprehended.
The El Paso Times reports that U.S. officials point to worsening conditions in Central America, in the form of poverty and violence, for the rise in border crossings.
