US customs arrests 5, seizes $740K in drug at Arizona-Mexico border

NEW YORK: Drugs U.S. Customs and Border Protection found in a vehicle. Five people were arrested this week in a string of drug smuggling cases at two separate ports of entry.

On Aug. 17, CPB officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested Jeanette Margarita Mendoza, 22, of Douglas,and seized nearly 284 pounds of marijuana valued at nearly $142,000.

In another case, officers arrested Noe Fernando Renteria-Rodriguez, 34, of Nogales, Sonora, at the Mariposa crossing after a CBP narcotics-detection dog alerted authorities to Renteria-Rodriguez’s truck, where officers discovered more than 8 pounds of methamphetamine valued at $24,000.

In a third case later in the week, officers at the Dennis DeConcini crossing arrested Luciano Ismael Haro-Gutierrez, 32, of Nogales, Sonora, after a CBP canine alerted authorities to his SUV, where officers say they found more than 13 pounds of cocaine worth more than $138,000.

Mariposa officers also arrested Antonia Delgado-Nunez, 52, of Magdalena, Sonora, after another dog alerted authorities to more than 9 pounds of cocaine worth more than $98,000.

In yet another case, Francisco Verdugo-Martinez of Nogales, Sonora, was arrested after authorities say a search of his SUV led the discovery of nearly 24 pounds of heroin in the vehicle’s roof. The drugs were valued at $338,000.
