WINTERHAVEN: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Andrade port of entry arrested a 66-year-old woman Monday after discovering 32 pounds of methamphetamine stashed in the gas tank of the vehicle she was driving.
At about 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, a woman entered the Andrade border crossing driving a 1999 Volvo station wagon. A CBP officer referred the woman and her vehicle for additional inspection.
After utilizing a density meter and noticing possible signs of tampering on the vehicle’s gas tank, CBP officers inspected the area and found 33 vacuum-sealed packages concealed inside. The packages contained about 32 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of about $240,000.
The woman, a Mexican citizen and legal permanent resident of the U.S., was arrested and turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents for further processing. She was later booked into the Imperial County Jail.
“Drug trafficking organizations are using people of all ages, races, and genders to get their illegal products into the United States,” said David Sarrasin, Port Director for the Andrade port of entry. “Our officers face a daunting challenge of stopping them, and they are more than up to the challenge.”
CBP seized the vehicle and narcotics.
