DETROIT: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers at the Fort Street Cargo Facility in Detroit seized more than 76 pounds of marijuana Wednesday, and arrested a truck driver who was a member of CBP’s Free and Secure Trade (FAST) trusted trader program.
A 56-year-old male citizen of the United States arrived at the Fort Street Cargo Facility hauling a shipment of auto parts. After declaring only auto parts, CBP officers referred the truck for an x-ray examination.
During the x-ray examination, CBP officers detected unusual shapes in the rear of the trailer. After breaking the seals on the trailer and opening the doors, CBP officers discovered two large duffel bags with a combined 68 bundles of a green, leafy substance. Field-testing determined that the substance was marijuana.
“The Free and Secure Trade program affords low-risk drivers to move through customs between the United States and Canada with minimal delay,” said John Nowak, Acting Port Director, Detroit. “Violations will result in immediate revocation, and in this case, prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”
CBP officers seized the marijuana and turned the driver over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents for further investigation.
