EL PASO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers working at the El Paso port of entry made four drug seizures. CBP officers confiscated 218 pounds of marijuana in three incidents and 14 pounds of cocaine in an additional bust.
“Drug smuggling remains a consistent threat and CBP officers are working hard to stop smugglers as they attempt to cross the border with hidden contraband,” said Beverly Good, CBP El Paso Port Director.Bundles hidden in floor of vehicle
The largest of the three marijuana seizures was made at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing when a 2009 Nissan Versa entered the port from Mexico. A CBP officer at the primary inspection booth noted that the driver was nervous and directed the vehicle to the secondary inspection area.
CBP drug sniffing dog “Leo” searched the vehicle and alerted to the front of the Nissan. CBP officers removed a total of 90 marijuana-filled bundles from the floor of the vehicle. The drugs weighed 96.8 pounds.
CBP officers arrested the driver, 25-year-old Ana Fabiola Aguirre Ruiz of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. She was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents to face charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.
