FAJARDO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations responded to a distress call and rescued a SeaDoo vessel with 4 occupants on board, which drifted because mechanical failure and bad weather.
“Our Marine Interdiction Agents are prepared to stop illegal smuggling operations as well as assist boaters in distress,” stated Johnny Morales Director of Air Operations for the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch. Marine Interdiction Agents remain steadfast to assist boaters in distress.
The distress call was made during an afternoon squall that had hit northeastern coastal area, indicating that the vessel had lost mechanical power between Cayo Icacos and Cabezas de San Juan natural reserve. The vessel master indicated that the vessel was drifting towards the reef with two adults and two children onboard.
The CBP marine unit found winds gusting to 40 knots and 8 foot seas in-route to the disabled vessel which was towed to a final destination of Villa Marina in Fajardo.
