ARIZONA: Customs and Border Protection arrested two people and seized nearly $250,000 in methamphetamine in Nogales.
In one encounter, authorities at the Dennis DeConcini crossing took a GM SUV, driven by 40-year-old Jose Joaquin Fuentes-Balbastro of Nogales, Sonora, to secondary inspection. A canine unit detected drugs.
Officers found nearly 47 pounds of methamphetamine, worth about $140,000, in the rear cargo.
In another, officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry took 25-year-old Latasha Monae Velasco of Nogales, Arizona to secondary inspection. Officers found 37 packages of methamphetamine, worth about $110,000, in the wheel wells of her Honda SUV.
The vehicles and drugs were seized. Both subjects were referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
