US customs seizes $3.5 million in marijuana, arrests two

 NEW YORK: US Border Patrol agents seized more than $3.5 million worth of marijuana in two separate incidents authorities say.

Agents at the Falfurrias checkpoint arrested a U.S. female citizen who attempted to smuggle almost 3,500 pounds of the drug in a tractor trailer, which was discovered by a K-9 unit. During a secondary inspection, agents found 134 bundles of marijuana worth $2.7 million hidden in the tractor trailer, according to a news release.

In the second incident, Rio Grande City agents observed a vehicle driving south toward the Rio Grande near Garceno, the vehicle began heading north and once agents arrived on scene they saw the vehicle parked on the side of the road in the brush and located the driver nearby, authorities say.

Inside the vehicle, agents found 39 bundles of marijuana weighing almost 940 pounds worth about $750,000. Starr County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area officials took custody of the driver, drugs and vehicle, the release said.
