HIDALGO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested two Mexican nationals after discovering they were attempting to smuggle more than 50 pounds of cocaine into the country.
The arrests were the result of two different seizures made throughout Thursday at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge, the agency said in a news release Friday.
The first arrest occurred after CBP officers found 18 packages of cocaine hidden in a sports utility vehicle driven by a 24-year-old from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The packages weighed 46 pounds, according to the release.
The second seizure occurred after CBP officers discovered nearly five pounds of cocaine hidden in a 2009 white Volkswagen driven by a 42-year-old male Mexican citizen from Juarez, Nuevo Leon.
The vehicles in both occasions were seized and both smugglers were released to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations.
