GEORGETOWN: Guyana’s government says the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will have its agents stay in the South American country for longer stints to better fight drug trafficking.
U.S. Charge d’Affaires Bryan Hunt confirmed that the DEA is currently identifying full-time agents who will be posted in Guyana for longer periods of time. The exact number of agents and the length of their stints have not been released.
Guyana’s previous administration had until last year resisted DEA efforts to set up an office there.
The U.S. government has long said Guyana is a major transshipment point for drugs headed to the U.S. and accused local officials of not doing enough to fight the illegal trade and related money laundering.
