MIAMI: Miami-Dade Police raided two homes making seven arrests as part of a credit card fraud investigation.
The first raid happened Wednesday night in Westchester, where an estimated $60,000 in cash and dozens of credit cards were seized.
“On the scene tonight, we’ve taken over 30 counterfeit credit cards,” said Marcos Rodriguez with Miami-Dade Police.
Detectives said an estimated $25,000 worth of items were purchased with those cards, to be sold at 60 percent off. Items seized by police on Wednesday included women’s purses, shoes, men’s shoes, jewelry, alcohol and electronic devices.
At the home in West Kendall, a husband and wife were arrested and more than 65 fraudulent credit cards were recovered, as well as a weapon and $5,000 in cash, police said. The couple had a minor child who was placed in the custody of family members, police said.
Investigators said the raids were connected and were proof that a long standing problem continues to require the crackdown of law enforcement.
Undercover detectives said an ongoing investigation brought them to the Westchester apartment complex, and to another apartment where they said five people were arrested.
Detectives said they don’t know how long the sales were going on, but said they have an idea how much money was illegally coming in.
“We have information they were making $20,000 to $30,000 per week,” Rodriguez said.
Investigators said they watched several people go in and out of the apartment to buy merchandise, before they moved in on the raid.
