VIRGINIA: An inmate has been charged with bringing drugs into the Richmond jail, Richmond Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr. announced here the other day.
The sheriff’s office discovered last week that two Richmond City Justice Center inmates housed in the same area of the jail had heroin, and inmate Jon Lewis Jr. had smuggled in the drugs when he was booked this month, according to the office.
A warrant was issued for possession of drugs by an inmate, a Class 6 Felony, the sheriff’s office said. It said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges might be filed.
The sheriff’s office released findings last week that inmate Shawn Samuel Jr. died of an accidental heroin overdose in July. The sheriff’s office said it suspects that a former inmate smuggled heroin into the jail.
The former inmate believed to have smuggled the drugs was not named.
Samuel, 22, was one of three inmates who died during a 72-hour period in July in the Richmond City Justice Center.
One of the other inmates, Javon Antoine Morris, 38, died naturally of coronary artery atherosclerosis, according to an autopsy and toxicology report.
Final autopsy and toxicology results for the third inmate, Zachary E. Tuggle, 29, are still pending.
