LONDON: US stocks expanded their losses at the end with Dow industrials dropping more than 300 points, as a slide in oil value sent energy shares sharply lower.
At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 331 points, or 1.9 per cent, to 17,502. The S & P 500 index slid 38 points, or 1.8 per cent, to 2,021.
The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 74 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 4,653.
Stocks began the session lower, with the losses piling up as oil prices plumbed fresh lows. Energy stocks led the push lower as US oil prices fell below $US50 a barrel for the first time in nearly six years. Shares of energy companies posted the biggest loss in the S & P 500, sliding 4 per cent.
Investors snapped up perceived haven assets such as US government debt and gold. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note tumbled to 2.048 per cent as prices climbed.
