NOGALES: Federal authorities have arrested a Phoenix-area woman accused of trying to smuggle over a dozen firearms from Arizona into Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers arrested a 23-year-old woman on Monday at the Mariposa crossing in Nogales, Arizona.
Authorities said the woman, who hasn’t been identified, was attempting to smuggle 16 weapons and several ammunition magazines into Mexico. She was driving a 2010 Toyota truck that was pulled over for additional inspection.
CBP officers seized the rifles and handguns along with her vehicle. They turned the woman over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations division.
Guns are largely illegal in Mexico, but many are smuggled in from the United States.
