NEW YORK: Users will be able to just pick up their phones and skim through the menus using just eyes. That’s the goal of software developer Eye Tribe, which has revealed the world’s first eye-tracking software development kit (SDK) for Android.

The kit was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and was named a 2015 Innovation Award honouree by the show’s organisers. And yes, it means that, one day, even Android users can claim to own an EyePhone. “With our solution, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) can fast-track integration of real eye tracking,” said CEO of Eye Tribe Sune, Alstrup Johansen, in a statement. “We want to bust the myth that it is an expensive and complicated affair.”

Myth-busting aside, this kind of technology has already been used by Samsung in its Galaxy S4 Smartphone and its series of Note phones and tablets. The South Korean company called it “Smart Stay”, which used the device’s webcam to detect user eyes and stop the screen from powering down while they were looking at it.
