Karachi: Investigation into vehicles amnesty scheme enters final phase

KARACHI: The investigation into the Vehicles Amnesty Scheme (VAS) case has entered into the last phase, it is learnt here.

The sources informed Customs Today that all the record of the imported vehicles, which were cleared under amnesty scheme during the period from November-2012 to June-2013, is being scrutinised.

The sources further disclosed this scribe that the committee members Additional Collectors Irfan Javed and Saeed Akram are investigating all aspects and available record into the case.

It may be mentioned here that the committee members have already conducted four hearings into the case and cross questioning from the personnel involved into the investigation were also being conducted by the committee members.

Responding to a query, the sources confirmed that partial replies have been submitted into the case by the customs officials adding that out of total six customs officials, from whom the investigation is being carried  five of them have been personally presented before the committee and record their statements into the investigation.

The sources further revealed that the committee has also directed the Departmental Representative (DR) Muhammad Naeem Khan to ensure early completion of the case and forwarded his findings to the committee within the stipulated time.

The sources further disclosed that the next hearing into the case would be conducted on May-5 or May-6 in which the committee members will record the statements of the customs officials on individual basis.

It is pertinent to mention here that more than a dozen notices have been served to the different stakeholders into the case which including customs officials, Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) staffers, departmental representative, members of previous probe committee and others.

To a query, the sources claimed that the committee would sum up its conclusion by the first week of the current month i.e. May and will send its final report to the FBR headquarters for further legal proceedings.
