Vellore court extends custody of 6 in red sander smuggling case

VELLORE: The Judicial Magistrate Court, Ambur, on Friday issued an order extending the judicial custody of six persons, including a couple, in a murder case and a red sander smuggling case till July 10.

A notorious red sander smuggler, Perumal (27) of Tiruvannamalai and three of his associates K Venkatesan (23), S Thangaraj (25) and S Sathiyamurthi (27) were nabbed in connection with the murder of their partner M Chinnapaiyan of Palur on May 29.

During interrogation, the quartet confessed to the crime.

Following this, the police produced them before the JM Court magistrate R A S Anandaraj, who in turn, remanded them to judicial custody till June 26.

As the custody came to an end on Friday, the police produced them before the court on Friday afternoon.

The magistrate issued an order extending their custody for 15 days.

Based on the information provided by the four persons, the police had arrested Jothi Lakshmi and her husband Nagendran of Sathuvachari for their involvement in red sander smuggling.

The police confiscated three four-wheelers, 3.5 tonnes of red sander logs and Rs 32 in cash from the couple’s house and took them for interrogation.

On inquiry, they spilled the beans about their illegal activities and also revealed that a police officer (DSP Thangavel) had been helping them in their illegal activities.

The couple also told the police that the police official helped them to loot seven tonnes of red sander logs from Chinnapaiyan on May 24, a day before he was murdered.

The court issued order to remand the couple under judicial custody.
