MEXICO: One of the year’s stunning celestial displays will occur at the end of June and beginning of July when Venus and Jupiter come together for a spectacular close encounter in the evening sky. On June 30, the sky’s brightest and second brightest planets will move to within one-third of a degree of each other, 30 minutes after sunset and 20 degrees above the western horizon.
Look for the dazzling duo of “evening stars” this week one hour after sunset in the western sky. Distinctly brighter Venus will be shinning at a stunning –4.3 magnitude and sit about 25 degrees above the horizon. Jupiter, shining at –1.9 magnitude, can be found 20 degrees to the upper left of Venus.
Venus and Jupiter have been our bright “evening stars” all year and will drop out of the evening sky late in July. The next close encounter between the king and queen of the sky will occur on Oct. 25 when they move to within 1 degree of each other in the morning sky.
