HANOI: Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City discovered a Vietnamese woman illegally bringing US$90,000 into Vietnam.
Customs officers said that they decided to carry out an inspection of the luggage of 32-year-old H.T.T.D., who had traveled from South Korea, as she was showing some suspicious signs.
They then found US$90,000 worth of cash, which was folded in small scrolls wrapped in white plastic bags, in the woman’s suitcase.
D., a Vietnamese, had not carried out formalities to declare that amount of money to customs officers.
The customs then made a report of the case, seized the money and worked with relevant authorities to carry out an investigation.
Under Article 2 of Circular 15/2011/TT/SB regulated by State Bank of Vietnam, cash of over $5,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) must be declared, along with related documents, at the customs office to be carried into and out of Vietnam.
Also on Tuesday, Kaur Gurcharan Singh Manpal, a 44-year-old Malaysian woman was caught carrying 16 bags of cocaine in her baggage after arriving at Tan Son Nhat at 7:20 pm, anti-drug officers under the airport’s customs reported.
She had traveled from Malaysia to Colombia, Panama, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates with the cocaine without being detected before landing in Vietnam.
